WORLD AIDS VACCINE DAY

Every year on May 18, World AIDS Vaccine day is observed as an important reminder about the importance of vaccine research. This observance also raises awareness of the impact of HIV and AIDS, risk, and stigma surrounding HIV and also acknowledge the role of all those people who are working towards finding a vaccine for HIV.

Despite decades of work, scientists have failed to develop an effective vaccine against the virus. The estimated $39-billion spent on Covid-19 vaccine development to date is nearly 50 times what’s spent on HIV vaccine research each year.

There is however, progress in finding a vaccine. In a phase 1 clinical trial, the vaccine appeared to be safe, and it had the desired effect in nearly all of the volunteers who received it.
